Agenda

On 17 March 2025, the Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers (ZPP) held a closed-door working lunch in Brussels titled “Energy Security as a Pillar of the Security of States and the EU: The Role of SMRs in Strengthening Energy Security.”

The event brought together policymakers, regulatory specialists, and nuclear energy stakeholders to discuss the role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in enhancing the EU’s long-term energy resilience. In light of ongoing geopolitical instability and disruptions in global energy supply chains, the conversation focused on the potential of SMRs as a decentralised, low-emission, and scalable energy source that can reinforce national and European energy strategies.

Participants explored the policy conditions necessary for advancing SMR deployment, including the streamlining of regulatory procedures, improved financing instruments, and strengthened cross-border collaboration. The discussion also highlighted the importance of integrating SMRs into broader EU industrial and climate objectives, calling for coordinated efforts between public institutions and private actors to support innovation and secure energy supply.
